The Classroom Walkthrough Template
Strong instruction does not happen by accident. It comes from clear expectations, consistent feedback, and supportive leadership. One of the most effective ways school leaders can ensure classrooms are thriving is through regular walkthroughs. These quick, focused observations highlight what is working and where growth is needed.
This Classroom Walkthrough Template, shared with us by Matthew Cowan, Executive Director of Believe Memphis Academy, is a ready-to-use tool that guides your observations and keeps the focus on what matters most for student learning.
What the Template Covers
The template organizes your walkthrough into four key focus areas:
1. Classroom Culture
Are expectations reinforced consistently?
Do students answer in complete sentences and participate equitably?
Are teachers providing clear, observable directions and immediate feedback?
2. Instructional Practices
Are lessons scaffolded with clear directions?
Are checks for understanding happening throughout the lesson?
Is the Gradual Release model visible (Model, Guided, Independent)?
3. Student Engagement
Are all students actively participating?
Do routines like Turn & Talk, Everybody Writes, and Cold Call promote equity?
4. Organization and Learning Support
Is the classroom environment neat, with clear systems for assignments?
Do visuals such as anchor charts, word walls, and reference materials support learning?
Is technology and the whiteboard used effectively to enhance instruction?
Turning Walkthroughs Into Real Impact
Walkthroughs should do more than check boxes. They are an opportunity to create a shared vision of excellent instruction across a school. With a common tool in place, leaders can:
Provide teachers with feedback that is clear and actionable.
Spot patterns that reveal schoolwide strengths and areas for growth.
Align staff around consistent practices that drive student success.
As Matt Cowan, Executive Director of Believe Memphis Academy, emphasized in his conversation on the CheckBox Pro Series, strong teams thrive on clarity and alignment. This template is designed to bring those qualities to life in everyday leadership.
